These are my 3D printers, the one on the left is the Makerbot Replicator and the one on the right is the Rostock Max that I just built. I have incorporated many improvements to the Rostock including....
I changed the Phillip head screws on the extruder with wing-nuts which makes changing the filament a tool free operation. I also changed out the socket head screw with a wing-nut which makes removing the extruder from the spool holder much easier.
I added LED lights so you can see the printing process much better. You can see in the picture that it is controlled by a knob by the power switch. I had to turn the brightness way down for the picture.
I printed these spool spacers so I can run a much wider roll of filament.
I printed the filament shaft and a EZ clip that reduces friction from the stock wooden one. The clip makes changing the filament much quicker.
I added a glass plate with two layers of aluminum foil between the glass and Onyx heated plate.
The foil helps distribute the heat evenly when printing ABS.
For PlA I can print on the glass with a thin layer of PVA mixed with water...
I had to add a peek fan for printing PLA. Without this, the PLA filament would heat up all of the way to the inlet fitting and harden. Believe me, it's a real pain to clean out.
What's next? Magnetic arms are coming soon.
Here is a close up of what I printed in the video. It is a vase in the shape of a gear, printed in just one single layer for the skin yet very strong and flexible.
Here is some stuff I printed on this Rostock just after building it. Some of the parts like the hollow cube were used in calibrating the machine...
I use an old 120 mm fan for cooling PLA prints but it didn't have fan guards, One of the first things I printed were the fan guards
The mounts for the LCD that come with the kit are made of wood and split on me when I tried to put screws into the narrow edges. So guess what, I printed new ones!!
Oh yea, the LCD controlled doesn't come with a knob, Printed that out too..

Here are some videos of the 3D printers at work.
* Start up and shut off sound with R2D2 sound effects..... Click here for Video
* Printing gear vase .03 mm single wall @ 124% print speed...Listen for the sound effects at the end of the Video
Want your own Rostock MAX?
They only come as a kit that needs to be completely assembled. There is a lot to know to get one of these to print like this. I can build you one with these upgrades and provide you with the setting for the firmware and software so you can start printing right away.
